Historic Coronation in Mexico
Andrea Kimi Antonelli made Formula 1 history in Mexico by securing the title at 20 years of age, becoming the youngest champion in Formula 1 history. Arriving barely two years after his debut with Mercedes, where he stepped in to replace Lewis Hamilton, the Italian reached the absolute top of motorsport following a rapid ascent. Antonelli entered the Mexican Grand Prix weekend holding a 123-point lead over George Russell, needing just two points—the equivalent of a ninth-place finish—to mathematically confirm the crown. A third-place drive in the race sealed the title, triggering palpable emotion over the team radio after the chequered flag.
Early Steps in Karting
Motorsport formed a familiar environment for Antonelli from childhood. Born in Bologna on 25 August 2006, he grew up in a family deeply connected to racing, with his father Marco active as a racing driver. Antonelli began his karting career at seven years old and quickly demonstrated notable talent. His karting achievements caught the attention of Mercedes, which signed him to its junior driver programme in 2019 when he was twelve years old, setting him on a pathway toward Formula 1.
Rapid Ascent Through Junior Categories
His progression through junior categories moved swiftly. In 2022, Antonelli won both the Italian and German Formula 4 championships in single-seaters. He added further titles the following year in the Formula Regional Middle East and the Formula Regional European Championship. Those results persuaded Mercedes to promote him directly into Formula 2 for 2024, bypassing Formula 3 entirely. During his maiden Formula 2 campaign, Antonelli placed sixth in the standings, claiming victories at Silverstone and Budapest.
Formula 1 Debut and Managing Pressure
When Hamilton announced his move to Ferrari for 2025, Mercedes awarded Antonelli a race seat alongside Russell at 18 years old. His 2025 debut season opened strongly as he collected podium finishes, 150 points, seventh place in the drivers' championship, and a sprint pole in Miami. The campaign also brought significant challenges as expectations mounted, culminating in a difficult mid-season European stretch with retirements at Imola, Barcelona, and Silverstone. Supported by Mercedes and team principal Toto Wolff, Antonelli rebounded toward the conclusion of the year with podium results in Brazil and Las Vegas.
Breakthrough Victory and 2026 Dominance
In 2026, Antonelli combined his initial experience with consistency and maturity. His maiden Grand Prix victory in China marked a turning point; starting from pole position, he held off George Russell to claim the win and become the second-youngest Grand Prix winner in Formula 1 history. That victory launched a sequence of consecutive wins covering Japan, Miami, Canada, and Monaco. Antonelli maintained his form through the remainder of the campaign with additional triumphs in Belgium, Italy, Spain, and the United States, amassing nine Grand Prix victories to emerge as the title favourite.
Ascari Milestone and Future Ambitions
Antonelli's triumph also delivered Italy its first driver to capture Formula 1's highest individual title since Alberto Ascari in 1953, ending a drought lasting more than 70 years. Despite securing the championship at 20, Antonelli retains further ambitions across motorsport, including a desire to compete alongside his father Marco in a GT3 race as he embarks on the next phase of his Formula 1 career.
